[[Skank Flank: The New Tramp Stamp]]
A few days ago, @forestine sent me {this article}. It’s another “tattoos are soo trendy” article from a major news source. Like we haven’t heard a thousand people tell us this before.
But here’s the part that really bothered her, and me:
… a popular placement for women’s tattoos has moved from the lower back to the rib area.
“We call it the ‘skank flank,’” [the tattoo artist we interviewed] said. “Every week or two, I see another girl with another rib piece, and you have to tell them that.”
Excuse me?
Wanting to get a discrete tattoo that you can easily cover up makes you a skank?
Since when are ribs considered a sexual body part?
Really, if nothing else this makes the fact that “tramp stamps” are body shaming that much more clear. For those of you who aren’t familiar with the term body shaming, it’s a cultural phenomenon that essentially makes everything you do with your body wrong. You’re fat? Lazy and disgusting. You’re skinny? Eat a cheeseburger you look anorexic. You’re fit? You look like a man. And so on. It’s designed to make women (and increasingly men) feel bad about their body, no matter what they do or how they look.
Here is how the same douchebags would like us to view tattoos:
- Lower back tattoos: you’re a tramp
- Rib tattoos: you’re a skank
- Wrist tattoos: you’re a dumb skank
- Arm tattoos: you’re a whore
- Leg tattoos: you’re a whore
- Feet tattoos: you’re a whore
- Shoulder tattoos: you’re a whore
- Tattoos anywhere: you’re a whore
- No tattoos: you’re still a whore.
There is no bit exaggeration in this. Anyone who would call the girl above a skank for getting a Disney tattoo on her ribs is a fucking idiot.
All of this language is used to control women. To make us judge each other’s bodies, feel self-conscious about our own, or dictate what we can or can’t do (with tattoos, weight gain/loss, or anything else.)
Really, the best way to nip this in the bud is by calling out anyone who uses the language of “tramp stamps.” The logic is the same in both, and by having conversations with people on why this sort of language hurts women, we can start reclaiming our ability to tattoo whatever parts of our body we want.
This astounding thing about this is, women probably started getting smaller tattoos on their ribs in an attempt to be able to be tattooed without being labeled a sexual slur. So what does our culture do? It makes sure those slurs follow the tattoo all the way up to the ribcage!
This serves as an important piece of evidence to me: no matter what women do to act within the unrealistic expectations for women in our culture, the culture will shift itself just enough to further enable oppression.
I just wanna add that the use of “whore” as an insult also irritates me. Oldest profession in the world yo.
Hello! My name is Erika. I’m 19 years old, and I’m a slut.
And guess what?
You’re a slut, too!
In fact, all of the women you know are sluts!
Even your mama!
Okay, please put the gun down. I’ll explain.
The world today has put a pretty strict model in place for how women should behave. They should always be modest, classy, and ladylike.
Always, motherfucker.
This means absolutely no dressing provacatively.
No pre-marital sex.
No assertive behavior, especially in the dating scene.
That sort of thing.
But the problem is that even women who fit the rigid standards are doomed to fail!
If a woman so much as speaks to a man who is dating/married to someone else, she’s a slut.
If a woman hangs out with her guy friends, she’s a whore.
If a woman takes birth control pills for medical purposes, she’s a streetwalker.
If a woman does virtually anything that someone else doesn’t like, the immediate reaction is to call her a slut.
So yes, even your mama is a ho.
But it’s okay.
You see, it doesn’t matter who’s a slut and who’s a virgin. Not really.
Because a woman who has lots of casual sex and a woman who is waiting til marriage are both just women.
A woman who carries condoms in her purse and a woman who carries a list of emergency phone numbers are not so very different.
A woman who wears short skirts and a woman who wears business suits are both normal human beings.
Because in the end, the way that others dress, have sex, etc. is their own personal choice, and it is no measurement of their worth. It also does not have any impact on their deserving of respect.
If you see a woman on the street wearing a short skirt, wave hello to her! Remember that her choices do not affect you, and that she is expressing herself and dressing her body in the way that makes her happy. She is a woman, and she deserves your respect.
If you know a woman who has premarital sex, do not gossip about her! She is sharing a human experience with people that she feels comfortable sharing it with, and she does not think that saving herself until marriage would make her happy in the same way that it makes you happy. She is a woman, and she deserves your respect.
If you see a woman talking to your boyfriend, do not call her names! Even though you know she has done nothing to impact your relationship, your jealousy is pushing you to call her hurtful things that you know are not true. She is a woman, and she deserves your respect.
So now you know all about sluts.
It sounds pretty silly now that you really think about it, right?
No one can follow the impossible rules of being a non-slut. No one. Not even nuns.
So lets embrace it!
Be a slut. Be proud. Express yourself sexually (or don’t!), wear what makes you happy, speak your mind, ask a guy on a date, make friends with men. The sky’s the limit!
And remember that the way that others choose to live their lives does not personally affect you. So there’s no need to get angry when you see a woman doing something you disagree with. Just respect that woman like you would want her to respect you.
You see? It’s all invented.
You’re a slut.
I’m a slut.
We’re all sluts.
And it’s okay.
Make No Mistake:
The Republican Party has declared War on American Women.
The only path forward for our nation is the UTTER DESTRUCTION
of this Republican Party.November 6, 2012 → OCCUPY A VOTING BOOTH

*not just cis women
But besides that, fuck yes. I’m voting for the first time this November, and you bet your ass I’m voting against the party who’s trying to make me a second-class in every way they can, as a cis woman and as a bisexual person.
oh we’re still using “occupy”? ‘kay.

Um excuse me, but whether or not I go down on someone has nothing to do with my self-respect.
It has everything to do with whether or not I want to go down on someone: which is none of your business. STFU, slut-shaming men.
Hm. I think straight men who slut-shame should stay celibate as a matter of principle. I guess I figure why should they get to have any sexual enjoyment if they think it’s wrong or shameful for women to? Fuck double standards.
Just my two cents.
Says a sex-positive panromantic lesbian working under the assumption that these two facebookers are straight cis-males.
